Getting kids to read can be difficult. There are so many distractions that keep them from wanting to pick up a book and read. I know my boys would much rather play video games or watch television than read a book. However, I’ve found that my kids love comic books and graphic novels.

I’ve found that more and more authors of children’s books are opting for a graphic novel style and I honestly love it. They are heavily illustrated and just plain fun to run. My boys can read through an entire series in a weekend. I think graphic novels are a gateway to heavier reading. My son went from Captain Underpants to Harry Potter within a year. He still loves graphic novels and comics (so does my husband) but he appreciates the stories in more classic books now.

Here are a few of our favorite graphic novels:

Lucy & Andy Neanderthal

These are a fun series of books by Jeffery Brown that combine a bit of science, history and humor. This is a fun book that tells the store of 2 cave kids and their life 40,000 years ago.

Star Wars: Jedi Academy

Again written by Jeffrey Brown, the Star Wars Academy series takes you on a jounry to a middle school in a galaxy far, far away. This is a fun series that captures the realities most kids can relate to at school.

Dog Man

Dav Pilkey is probably most well know for writing the Captain Underpants series, which we love. Dog Man is a sort of spin off of George and Harold’s comic book creations. Dog Man is part dog, part man and all super hero.

Super Mario Adventures

If your kids love video games or if you love classic games like Super Mario then this is a great book. This is a collection of comics that originally ran in the Nintendo Power magazine.

Diary of an 8-Bit Warrior: An Unofficial Minecraft Adventure

Video game books are a favorite, especially when they are unofficial. The Diary of an 8-bit Warrior series is a creative journal of a young Minecraft villager.

The Legend of Zelda Box Set

If you want to know the history of all of the Legend of Zelda games read these books. They are read right to left (Japanese style) but are in English.

Teen Titans Go! Box Set

The Teen Titans have a TV show, a movie and tons of comics and graphic novels. This super hero team has crazy adventures and hilarious banter.

Science Comics

Science Comics combine graphic novels and science. Kids learn about in-depth science subject through a comic books style writing.

These are just a few of our favorites. There are so many other great graphic novels and comic books that kids can enjoy reading. We also have a comic book subscription at our local comic book store for kid friendly comics.
