I graduated! – 10 years ago
I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since I graduated from college…
And 13 years since I graduated from high school…
Graduation from college, high school and even preschool are all momentous occasions for a child. (wish I had a picture from my preschool graduation to put here… it would be funny and cute!)
When I graduated from high school I thought I was hot stuff. As valedictorian (from a graduating class of 11) I got to speak at graduation. Afterward I went off to celebrate with my family and friends and spent the summer doing all the normal things a kid does before heading off to college (beach trips, traveled overseas, worked and saved money, etc..) Life was pretty simple.
When I graduated from college I was much more aware of reality. I received no special honors or rewards from my graduating class of hundreds. Afterward I packed up all of my belongings to move back in with mom and dad. I had no idea what the future held for me (job, marriage, housing, etc…). At that point life started to get complicated. However, graduating from college was a huge accomplishment as I was the first in my immediate family to receive a bachelors degree.
Today, I think life has turned out pretty well. I spent a few years working freelance in the television industry, traveling, and just enjoying life. Now I have a beautiful family and a list of great accomplishments behind me that remind me of what I’m capable of doing with my life. I may not be using my degree right now but all the lessons I’ve learned along the way have more than prepared me for what the future holds.
