What Happens if You Get Sick at Disney World?

On a recent trip to Disney World, I found myself in need of a doctor. I didn’t have a car, and I wasn’t sure how to go about getting the medical care I needed. Fortunately, I remembered that Disney World has a partnership with AdventHealth. Nobody wants to get sick at Disney World, but if you do, know you can access easy health care.

AdventHealth offers a network of services for Walt Disney World Resort Guests, including urgent care, doctor visits, prescription delivery, equipment delivery, and more. They also provide transportation to Centra Care Urgent Care clinics. So, I was able to call the number listed in the My Disney Experience app to schedule a pickup from my Disney resort to Centra Care Urgent Care.

My Experience with AdventHealth

I visited Disney World in the middle of summer on one of the hottest days of the year. Even though I’ve often been to Disney, I never needed medical care until this trip. I noticed a blister forming on my foot at the end of my first day, but by the middle of my second day, I had 4 larger blisters that were only getting worse despite using bandages to reduce irritation. By day 3, I could barely walk and noticed swelling and redness around the blisters, which alerted me to a developing infection.

Because I took the time to familiarize myself with the My Disney Experience app before my trip, I remembered seeing the Accessibility & Health Services page. First thing in the morning, I found the phone number for AdventHealth and called them to ask about their services. The representative asked how I needed assistance and arranged for a driver to pick me up from my Disney hotel. The driver arrived within 5-10 minutes. The vehicle was marked, and I was taken directly to the Centra Care Urgent Care clinic free of charge.

Once I arrived at the clinic, I checked in at the front desk, filled out the appropriate paperwork, and provided my health insurance information. I was called back within 15 minutes and seen by the nurse immediately. The doctor arrived a few moments later, prescribed me antibiotics for my infection, and gave me tips for bandaging my feet. They could fill my prescription at the clinic, and the doctor said most prescriptions cost between $10 and $15. After I checked out and paid my standard urgent care co-pay, they arranged for me to be driven back to my Disney hotel.

My experience was quick and easy. It took a little over an hour, including the round trip to and from the clinic. I was pleasantly surprised by the clinic’s efficiency and quality of care.

I learned my lesson that extreme heat and excessive walking cause your feet to swell. My feet didn’t have room to expand, even wearing my worn-in sneakers. (Also, ladies, did you know your feet can continue to grow?) When I returned home, I went to a local store for running shoes that scanned my feet and helped me find appropriate footwear for walking around Disney in the summer.
