Catalonia Royal La Romana Review: Quiet Luxury in the Dominican Republic
This Catalonia Royal La Romana review goes beyond a typical stay recap; we didn’t just sleep here, we toured the entire property, visited the spa, and got a behind-the-scenes look at how the Royal section actually compares to the rest of the resort complex.
And honestly? There were a few things that surprised us in the best way.

Our trip started with a very early 4 AM transfer from a hotel near the Charlotte airport, followed by a 3-hour flight into Punta Cana. While La Romana does have its own airport, flying into Punta Cana worked out better for both timing and cost, and the transfer to the resort took about 45 minutes.
From the moment we arrived at Catalonia Royal La Romana, the atmosphere felt noticeably calm and intimate compared to larger Caribbean resorts.

Arrival & Getting to the Resort
We arrived before our room was ready, so we enjoyed lunch at the buffet over at Catalonia Bayahibe. It was open-air, relaxed, and a great introduction to the property.
Shortly after, we were upgraded to a swim-up suite in the Royal section, which immediately elevated the experience. The room was spacious, modern, and conveniently located near the main areas of the resort.
From there, we spent the afternoon enjoying the beach and pool areas. One thing that stands out in this Catalonia Royal La Romana review is just how consistently beautiful and swimmable the beach is in this region, with very little sargassum compared to other Caribbean destinations.

Full Property Tour & Spa Visit
A major highlight of this visit was a full site tour with a resort representative. This gave us a much deeper understanding of how the property is structured and what guests can expect depending on their room category.
We also toured the spa at Catalonia Royal La Romana, which felt tranquil and well-designed, with a focus on relaxation and wellness treatments that fit the adults-only atmosphere of the Royal section.
One of the most important takeaways from this Catalonia Royal La Romana review is the benefit structure between the Royal and Bayahibe sections.
Guests staying in the Royal section receive access similar to the resort’s highest tier guests at Catalonia Bayahibe. That includes additional privileges such as:
- More pool areas
- Expanded beach seating sections
- Additional dining locations across the complex
This dual-resort access adds a lot of flexibility and value, especially for travelers who like variety in their day-to-day vacation experience.

Dining & Atmosphere
We had dinner at BLoved, one of the resort’s specialty restaurants, and enjoyed an outdoor table with a relaxed Caribbean atmosphere. The food was excellent, and the overall experience felt intimate and unrushed.
Breakfast the next morning at Thalassa was another standout. The restaurant offers both buffet service and a Mediterranean-style à la carte dinner menu. Breakfast included fresh-made crepes, made-to-order juices, and a wide variety of hot and cold options.

Service & Guest Demographics
Service throughout the stay and tour was consistently excellent—attentive, friendly, and efficient.
One notable aspect of this Catalonia Royal La Romana review is the international guest mix. Catalonia is a Spanish-based brand, and during our visit, most guests were from Western Europe, with additional travelers from South America, including Argentina.
This creates a different overall atmosphere than many U.S.-based Caribbean resorts. A few key differences to be aware of:
- Dining times tend to run later, with dinner commonly around 8 PM or later
- Lunch peaks closer to 1:30–2:00 PM
- Smoking is permitted in many outdoor areas
- Spanish is the dominant language among guests, with English widely spoken but not always the primary default
These aren’t negatives, just important expectations depending on your travel style and preferences.

This Catalonia Royal La Romana review reflects a boutique-feeling adults-only resort with strong amenities, excellent beach access, and the added benefit of full access to the larger Catalonia Bayahibe complex.
Between the swim-up suite upgrade, spa visit, and full property tour, what stood out most was the balance of intimacy at Royal with the flexibility of a larger resort experience next door.
For travelers looking for a relaxed Caribbean stay with a more international feel and strong value in an adults-only setting, Catalonia Royal La Romana is absolutely worth considering.
