Music Review: Joy Williams – Venus

·

You may be familiar with Joy Williams’ previous work with the four-time Grammy-winning folk-rock duo The Civil Wars. Since the bands haitus in 2012 Williams has been working on her first solo album, Venus (out June 29th). Venus is a beautiful honest look into the journey Joy has taken over the past two and a half years.

I’ve been listening to the album for a few days now and it is a beautifully poetic album that drastically differs from the familiar sound the Civil Wars produced. This album has more of an alternative and hip-hop feel than the folksy sound. You can certainly tell that Williams drew from her love of artists like Annie Lennox and Portishead.

They lyrics are much more personal and is easy to identify with, especially as a female listener.

It feels like I’m reclaiming myself. I identified so much with The Civil Wars that when it went away I had to process the myth that I’d been a part of creating, free myself of that, and rediscover my own voice. Working through that really opened me up. In finding my voice I found myself again. – Joy Williams

I participated in the Joy Williams Venus album review program as a member of One2One Network. I was provided an album to review but all opinions are my own.
