This past weekend my mom threw a “Mother’s Blessing” for my sister-in-law Jillian and I. It was part Mother’s Blessing and part typical Baby Shower… but totally a blessing!
What is a Mother’s Blessing (Blessing Way)
Here’s what a Christian Mother’s Blessing (Blessing Way) can look like. The activities of a Blessing Way center around preparing the mother for labor, celebrating the impending birth, and offering spiritual support. Everyone was inform that no horror birth stories were allowed only uplifting and encouraging words for the new mom. It is a way to give thanks to our amazing Creator for this new life he has blessed us with. A Mother’s Blessing focuses on support, encouragement and love from family and friends. There is a prayer for the mother, new baby, birth, and family transition.
Food and Gifts
The Mother’s Blessing can have food and gifts just like any typical Baby Shower. We opted to have a brunch with quiche, juice, fruit, pastries and more. Friends and family blessed us with gifts for the baby and mother.
Then my mom gave an explanation of the Blessing Way and scripture to encourage the mothers. Here are few examples of scriptures to use during the Blessing Way:
Our mother’s and grandmothers surrounded us with a Heritage BLESSING & PRAYER .
Prayer Birth Beads
Then as we opened GIFTS while people strung BIRTH BEADS which give the mother strength and focus during labor and remind her of all the family and friends that are praying and supporting her. It is a powerful and tangible way to show the love and support that surrounds the mother. Guests also write encouraging scripture, prayers, loving thought, poem, or quote to share with the Mom.
At the end of the day there was a SIGN-UP that people joined to be part of the labor prayer chain and bringing meals after the baby is born.
Some people will include foot washing, massage, belly casting, belly painting, prayer candles and more in their Mother’s Blessings. The goal is the bless not only the new baby but the mother and family. Family and Friends show their support and encouragement to the growing family through prayer, gifts and uplifting words.
