Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Review

·

The other day Jude had a random teacher workday so I took my oldest (6th grader) to see the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie. We saw the preview for the movie about a month ago and all of my boys were super excited about this movie based on a popular video game.

Sonic the Hedgehog is based on the popular video game franchise from Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog. The move tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. It has the feel of a typical kid-friendly villain movie but the story line, acting and graphics are all top quality. What I particularly love is the story which explains the origin of the Sonic character, Dr. Robotnic and the purpose of the gold rings. I know the original Sonic animation was a little creepy and garnered much criticism from the internet but the newly designed Sonic is very cute and fits seamlessly into the live-action movie.

I also liked that my kids are introduced to Jim Carrey in a modern kid-friendly movie (I know he’s in the Grinch but you can’t really tell it’s a human actor). Jim Carrey was a very influential comedian in my youth so it’s great to share his humor with my kids.

Aside from the great story and acting I will say I was a little surprised by some of the language that some people might find offensive like hell and a cut of son of a …. There is a little bit of violence like a bar fight, chase scenes with explosions and a few punches but nothing too violent in my opinion. Otherwise I’d say it’s a fairly family friendly movie, probably best suited for elementary age children and older.

I’d recommend seeing Sonic the Hedgehog for you next family movie night especially if you have kids that are fans of the video game.
