Homemade Tortillas

Yesterday I embarked upon a journey of the homemade kind. We eat alot of flour tortillas around here and where I usually get them for realtively cheap with coupons I thought it would be even cheaper just to make them. (not to mention better)

So for anyone that wants to know how to make flour tortillas here you go!

Ingredients:
4 cups all purpose flour
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. baking powder
1 cup luke warm water

Mix flour and baking powder together
add vegetable shortening with hand until mix is corse
stir salt into water
slowly pour water mixture into flour mixture
mix together until you make a big dough ball (add more water if needed)

cover dough ball for 20 minutes
separate dough into 12 sections
add a little shortening to your hands and make 12 dough balls

heat a pan to medium
add flour to your work surface and rolling pin and roll out the 12 dough balls as thinly as possible

place the tortilla in the pan letting it cook on each side for about 20 min.
continue flipping the tortilla until it’s done (I use a fork to grab the edge. you should notice air bubbles forming and they should slightly brown on each side)

I roll one while I’m cooking one at a time because I have a really small work area.
You can keep the tortillas warm under a towel until ready to serve.

All-in-all it was pretty easy just time consuming. It took about an hour to do everything.
