My son had a surgery much like a hernia surgery when he was 5. What I was not prepared for was what happened immediately following surgery when he woke up. He was crying hysterically, which in talking to other parents later, I hear that it common for small children to wake up that way from anesthesia. They had given him a numbing injection to help with pain but he was unable to feel his legs I guess and thought for sure they had been cut off. They sent him home so quickly...it was like 1/2 hour after he was awake, and the whole ride home he was sick to his stomach and throwing up and we had over an hour to travel. About 2 or 3 hours after he was sent home everything they had done for pain for him was wearing off and he began to really feel it. The Tylenol with Codeine we were sent home with was doing nothing. 2 days later he was in massive pain and we had to rush him back to the children's hospital. His digestive system was just in some turmoil and after some bouts of vomitting he felt better. He wanted to eat nothing for days, had no appetite. We were never really warned his meds would cause constipation and a few days later we had that to deal with when he several incision areas on his abdomen...not fun.

I hope this doesn't scare you but its things I was totally unprepared for. I wish I had known some of this stuff could happen so I could have been better prepared for things like vomitting in the car. Stock up on foods you can bribe him to eat...his faves. Also get apple cider or apple juice, orange juice and prune juice and really push those to help avoid the constipation.

Praying for Jude, and you! My daughter has had a few surgeries and I've spent quite a bit of time with my best friend & goddaughter during her chemo and procedures for leukemia. The childrens hospital has always been amazing, both girls have had a rough time at home with the no eating/drinking thing but once we've arrived at the hosptial... they just help to deal with things and both girls have done amazing. The worst was once when my daughter was admitted to the hospital and was having a sedated procedure... so nothing to eat or drink after midnight... she was scheduled for 11am.... they didn't bring her down until 5pm (yes 5). She asked for food and wondered why they weren't letting her eat, but I think she handled it much better than I did (I hated knowing she was hungry, wanted to eat and couldn't).
