I was put on BC the moment my Mom found out I was sexually active at the ripe age of 13 and I didn't go off of it until I was 20. After each child I went back on because I was very fertile as well, the one time I didn't go back on was after my last, he was our surprise baby. After he was born I again went back on BC. All together I had been on some form of BC for over ten years. It never really occurred that it could be causing damage to my body until I started having health problems. It had quadrupled my triglycerides. When I did m y reading and found out this was a possible side effect I stopped the pills and researched my other options. The ONLY one I felt comfortable with was the hormone free IUD but none of the physicians I called would do it.
Sorry long story short if I still needed a BC option that would be the way I would go.

That is great info. I've heard horror stories too about Mirena which make me very apprehensive. I wasn't aware of the no period thing... hmm.

I have had the Mirena, since 2009. I've never been on Paraguard (hormone free) but I can tell you from experience from the Mirena, I would never ever, ever go back to regular birth control pills. I had a horrible reaction to Ortho-Tri-Cyclen, so I quit taking them and my DR suggested the IUD. This maybe TMI, but after I got it put in there was some slight discomfort with the strings, but other than that I have never had any problems with it. I have heard "horror" stories with the Mierna, I think results do vary in this case. The bright side, I don't have to worry about taking a pill or charting my period every.single.month, its good for 5 years, and I never ever, have a period. Good luck & explore your options, IUD isn't for everyone. :)
