I like my house straight too and I do try to give a little warning of "hey, we're on our way." just in case someone is in their underwear or something.

I think it depends on the neighborhood. We've lived in a few places where everyone was hospitable but some where no one ever talked to anyone.
You'd think southern hospitality would prevail in the south.

I don't mind people stopping by either. I enjoy having company, although I do prefer some notice so I can straighten up house. I'm OCD that way. During the winter months, we spend a lot of time on weekends hanging out at friends' houses. Those same friend will stop by ours as well and we'll spend hours talking and enjoying each other's company. Good times.

I have to say that one of the things I love about my community where I am now is that we get together formally once a month for book club but we're always outside, chatting, sharing a beer or glass of wine, letting our kids run through our backyards and houses. On more than one occasion, a conversation in the street has turned into an impromptu block party.

What I found in Raleigh is that we were really missing a sense of community and the ability to just knock on someone's door. It's taken me a while to not panic that my house is a disaster every time some stops by. I'm learning that they've come to see me, not my house.
