My neighbor just had her 3rd child, and I was shocked when she said that her daughter, 5yo, wanted to be there--so they let her. And they were glad they did. (They had a hospital birth, but our hospital has a rockin' maternity ward, which I think makes up for not having a local midwife or birthing center. They totally accommodate anything within reason.)

When my aunt was a little girl, she witnessed her mother giving birth. The even was so traumatic, that my aunt never had children of her own (which is a shame, she was a wonderful woman and would have made an exceptional mother). On the other hand, my close friend has 5 children, and at each birth the other children that wanted to attend were allowed to, and now each child can't wait to start a family of their own. I think it depends on the situation.

I think it's an awesome thing to have an older child/ren at the birth. My kids all have very fond memories of each birth they have attended and have such a respect for the birth process as a whole because of that. I know my boys will be a great help to their wives someday because of what they have been able to witness. Jude being almost 3 is a really neat age to see how they react. We have never had one react negatively.
